Tricks - Tips for Siphon's ...

All suck jokes aside, the fish water can carry things not good for humans (or fish) such as parasites, fish tuberculosis (transferrable to us), and harmful bacteria. It may be alright for our fishies, but not for us!!!!

I dont have a problem with the whole pumping it in and out of the water to get it started. If your water level is too low then it becomes a problem. Or if your vac is too big for the tank. After you get it started the first time, when you fill your bucket, just kink the end of the hose and put the end into the tank. That will keep the water in the hose, then when you return with the bucket kink the hose again, pull it out of the tank and put it back into your bucket. That will keep you from having to repeat the process. Lucky for me, my aquarium is right in front of a window, so all I have to do is put one end out the window and suction away until I am done. But for my 10g I use the kink to keep it going. Good Luck. If you can afford a python, buy it!!!!

Just do it the old fashioned way. Put one end in the tank, put the other end in your mouth, and suck until the water level in the hose comes over the lip of the tank and back below the water level inside, and . . . . away she goes.

You might get an occasional mouthful of water, but if its good enough for your fish it should be good enough for you.

That's what i gotta do and I've finally mastered it without getting a mouthful of water. Even when i did swallow some, I didn't feel sick and I'm not dead, so... :)

I swallow my aquarium water all the time. As a kid I had a brackish tank that I'd taste to gauge the amount of salt in the water. No harm done yet. Except for the fishy breath, and the green stuff oozing out of my ears, and this weird twitch in my eye. . .
