I woud not do it . Triggers are great but if kept in a large tank. If you buy a tiny specimen it would be ok in a 55 but it will quickly outgrow it.
Triggers can grow really big but not really fast! I've had my Niger for about 11 months and I don't think he grew one inch! He is about 3 or 4 inches. The Niger can grow up to 18''! I would say try and find a small blue throat trigger. JMO
By "black trigger", I'm assuming you mean the Black Durgeon, since it's the only "black" Trigger.
They're fast growers and will max out at 12"...certainly not meant to be kept in a 55gal.
Whether you buy small or not, Triggers are not a speices that should be kept in a 55gal. tank, for any extended period of time.

i have ehar than an Undulated trigger would be okay in a 55 from numerous people. weather this is true i dont know.... but i have also heard if you did this they should be alone because they are nastier than clown triggers.
Undulated are small triggers but size doesn't matter for these guys. These are one hell of a fish, when I say hell I mean HELL!
