Our town water supply has just been cited for high trihalomethane content.

What effect does this have to the fish and how can it be removed?

After a large water change 4 of my 5 java loaches died. There are alot more factors involved in that than just a waterchange (new job + no time = no water changes = 1000 plus nitrates...yeah i know bad..i dont need a tongue(keyboard?) lashing)

According to the inet trihalomethane is created by the reaction between chlorine and organic matter (in other words the shrapnel, secondary fires, ruins, etc after the water treatment kills everything).

A brief search results in some unsubstatiated claims that carbon filtration will remove it. I am currently using about a 10x dosage of purigen in the filter to get the nitrates down faster.

thanks

How much water did you change at one time. Nitrates being that high, it is considered old tank syndrome (OTS). With OTS, you have to change water out ver slowly over a period of time to get the parameters back in line or you will put your fish into shock and possibly kill them..

No clue about the chemical listed..

Brita

If you are worried about it put all the H20 into a brita or try a faucet mount it will be quicker the activated carbon block filter will remove the THM
