Triop farm?

I would say for a science fair idea to just run a life cycle of them. you could even make a live display of the age groups. Just an idea..
I would certainly include that on the presentation, along with other background information. Maybe not live though. Science fair presentations, at least in our area, have to ask a question, make a hypothesis, experiment, conclude, etc. I'm sure I'm missign something.

I actually prefer "sea monkey's" to triops. I have found that very few of the eggs hatch for triops, and because they are cannibals, you most often end up with only 1. With sea monkeys (I am using the term sea monkeys because I am refering to the kit) you actually have an instant pet. The kits are SUPER easy. When I was 10 I got one and kept a colony going for 2 years. I got a kit for $6 that lasted me that long.

Whenever I got "sea monkeys" they never worked and when I had triops I always had at least two grow to adult size each time

Really? With my packet all I did was pour in some powder (I assume salt/decholrinator) and eggs 24 hours later. 5 days later the shrimp had reached maturity and you could start feeding them. 1 small scoop of green powder every 5 days! Also, sea monkeys last longer than triops. I believe triops life span is only 1-3 months. In those sea monkey colonies, their is a tiny breeding popluation that keeps them going for years!

My 8yo got a triops kit for christmas. The first batch never hatched. Glad I held half back. Now waiting to see if the second batch of eggs has any winners. If not, not sure what I'll get for him to put in there. So far triops have been a big disappointment.

I found out a bit too late that science fairs are often more about procedure, than exactly WHAT you are studying....tho the interesting/clever ones tend to get more attention.

Here's a rough outline:

Question: What is the optimum temperature for triops development?
OK, scratch that...simplify it...how about:
Will triops develop faster at 70F vs 65F? (OR MAYBE 65 VS 75?)

Hypothesis: they will develop fastest at xxF.

Experiment: Run a couple of batches at both temps and document the results. Take pictures. Make a conclusion based on your limited sample size.

For your display, maybe have a few live triops in a bowl so the judges can see what they are.

This general outline would work for most any aquatic critter.

Other thoughts:
-Hard water vs soft
-tap water vs distilled
-fresh vs brackish
