I was somewhat entertained to see triops At wal-mart yesterday in the feeding section of their fish department. I never had "prehistoric triops" but did have a lil container of sea monkeys when I was in jr. high. Anyway, does anyone think they are worth the three bucks as food? Are they even good for fish to eat? I almost bought them just to watch them hatch but quickly thought twice. Any thoughts? :o

I don't know about using them for food but they are VERY interesting to have and look at. I have 3 left right now that are almost 60 days old. They live between 20 and 60 days or so.
They sure do look prehistoric! Worth trying just to see them, they grow quickly too.

Reviving an OLD thread... I got some triops

So I got some eggs from walmart. Following the instructions I have got a little goldfish bowl with a teeny bit of sand in the bottom, and I dumped half the eggs and detritus in the bowl. Put a 60watt lamp on it, and let's see what happens. It's been six hours. I PLAN to feed these things to my ten gallon tank. Since they don't live very long, I am thinking that my mystery snail will eat them when they croak... yum

Two are getting BIG

The pic is of the two triops that hatched yesterday. They are in the fishbowl.

Yesterday morning I started another 3/4 gallon tank, two-thirds with water and THIS one has bubbles. I've got ONE swimming around in there, who must have JUST hatched because an hour ago there was nothing swimming in there.

You guys are right, this is pretty interesting. The two big ones are still too small to photograph with MY camera, but I can definitely see the "stingray" shape to them already. In about six hours they'll probably be big enough for the auto-focus!! haha :thm:

They seem pretty cool looking.

After doing some reading they say the lifespan is only up to 90 days.

Is that with proper care I wonder, water changes ,maybe a small filter, heater.

Buy reading the descriptions it seems most treat them like Bettas in a small bowl.

Let me know how long yours live for.

I used to have a pretty big triops in a small bowl, but then one day I came home to find that my cat had dragged it halfway through the house, then decided it wasnt worth eating.

I've heard of people feeding them to their fish before. As far as nutritive value, I have no idea of their value.
