Hi everyone, I am brand new to this website and also with keeping African Cichlids. My best friend has kept them for years and my wife and I always thought they were such interesting and gorgeous fish. So we started a tank about a month ago and everything is going very well! The only problem we are having is identifying which species of cichlids we have. So hopefully with ya'lls help I will be able to get some sleep instead of staying up late on the compter trying to find it out. The first four came out of a assorted tank at PetCo. The last one we bought from a guy who breed's them and for the life of me I cant remember what he called it. I want to thank everyone in advance for all the help!

The bottom one looks like a Melanochrmis Auratus Cichlid. The top two look like some sort of Metriaclima.

I disagree. The bottom one looks like a maingano. Auratus are brown and black not blue and black like this one.

#1 Looks like a cynotilapia species, though I'm not sure which one. It has a lot of white top hara traits but the yellow across the top rules that out. Coming out of a assorted tank means it's a good chance it's a hybrid.

#2 OB zebra would be my guess, Metriaclima estherae(OB)

#3Look like it may be a hap species. I don't know a lot about those. Has some red empress traits but I'm not sure when they are young like that.

#4 Looks like a mutt. It as several traits from many species. Possibly has some rusty in it.

#5 Maingano, Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos

I can buy all of those ids except #3, in which you're actually half right. It's not a Hap it's a Protomelas, which is the genus that a Red Empress is in.
