true unfiltered aquarium without even aereation?

i wouldn't throw in those neons. a betta and some shrimp will be a great idea. i have a 10 gal that has a small sponge filter, literally half full of plants, with a betta and 5 cherry shrimp and the water's been crystal clear, disease free, and the betta is gorgeous.

Lets make one thing clear! Plants do need circulation and fish create circulation by swimming. That transports O2 surface water to lower levels. So having fish defeats the 'unfiltered aquarium without even aereation' theory. With fish your getting aereation. Plants provide the filtration.

I have a 10g without filtration, aeration or heating. Its outside as well, exposed to weather (tropical, mid summer). The plants get so much sunlight that there is always air bubbles comming from them (pearling). The water remains clear and there is no smell (maybe because its outside). I've got ramshorn and mystery snails in it and they do eat the plants but there is so much hair algae and plants there is no visible effect on the plant. Surprisingly, no algae at all on the glass walls. The biggest "problem" I've got is mosquito larva. I've started collecting them and feeding to my angels and livebearers and now, I've just added a few wild guppies. That was yesterday so its too early to say how they will do.
