My local pet store told me that trumpet snail won't eat plants, but that they will clean algae and such. Sounded pretty good to me so I added about 10 or so several days ago. It seems like they hide away during the day--the burrow into the substrate, and it seems like they burrow right next to plants into the roots more often than not. What are they doing? Is mixing up the substrate benificial at all or is it harmless? Stiring the substrate would seem as if it should have some ramifications...

Stirring up the substrate is like getting a free mini-vacuum. I would think this is beneficial. A lot of muck gets into the substrate with no way to escape other than vacuuming or a bunch of snails sifting it around.

The trumpet snail won't eat your plants, at least mine haven't munched on any of my plants yet. You didn't need to buy so many of them. I got mine for free when I bought a plant. Those things breed like crazy. They do a great job of keeping the substrate clean and help break it up a little for the plants to root better. I would recomend getting a fish that will eat them in a few months. If not, you could end up with a tank full of the little guys.

I have a bunch in my tank as well. They will probably hide a bit at first, but eventually they'll come out more often. It's very good to have your gravel aerated and cleaned by this guys, they will also only consume dead plant material.

good. grand. great. I got them for free also, the lady (from the pet store) said that they were prolific, but supposing that the numbers become a problem and they start eating plants or something, then what kind of fish eat snails? My tiger barbs seem to leave them alone.

I have a black shark that likes them. He has to get them when he can still bite through the shell or wait till it gets big enough to flip it over, pull out the garlic sauce, and have some escargot. The only problem is that the black shark is rather aggressive to the rest of his tank-mates.

These snails are def. not good for fish that crush snails, as they are too hard and can hurt themselves. They are very beneficial as they stir the gravel up and aerate it. If you want to decrease their number, just put some zuccini or somethign eslse they like to eat, and they will gather and you can just take them out.

There are a few empty shells that I didn't knowtice before, prehaps the tiger barbs have already aquired a taste for the trumpet snails...

It is not always a good idea just to add a fish to eat your snails... there is a lot to consider!! If you decide there are too many, as suggested already put in something for the snails to eat (lettuce, zucchini, wafer) and when all the snails converge on it, take it out. MTS do hide during the day in the substrate and come out at night. Mine do not eat plants and if they start to multiply too quickly, I cut back on my tank feedings. Please do not add a fish just to eat snails because you don't like them anymore! Do some research first.

As for tiger barbs, maybe they do like the snails, good luck :)
