I've been running DIY CO2 for quite some time and I haven't had any algae outbreaks. I did develop a small case of BBA but that was by my own doing of gasing off the CO2 when I had fry. That tank is back to normal now and the little tufts of BBA are starting to dissapear.
It's all in the fluctuation. If you manage it properly, one shouldn't have to worry about it. When you notice the level decreasing, recharge the mix or add a fresh bottle.
