Trying some pothos plants.

Looking great, Joel! That's a whole lotta roots in that HOB!

I guess you could call it a HOB, but it's not a filter, it's a breeder box that requires a small air pump to move water through it.

I can tell you based on my terrestrially based experience with them, there is no reason to worry about how the plants do. Pothos are next to invincible, and they don't care much about light if there is some. Since they are submerged, there is no problem with them drying out, so they'll do just fine in there. I might have to set one of these up soon.

Interesting project. I'v been considering pathos since I saw Dustin use them in a YouTube video. Yours seem to be growing very nicely.

I would be cautious with the $1 store baskets-I've seen them get very brittle when used in water. You never know what you're getting at the $1 store.

I set these plants up just over a month ago (March 30). The top tank with pothos in the large marina air powered breeder box are growing like crazy. The lower tank, where I put a few stems in a plastic basket clipped to the top/rear or the tank is growing and has sprouted new leaves, but is growing much slower. As we discussed earlier, most likely due to the fact the roots get exposed for 30min+ to the air during WWCs.

Here's the pics from 03/30/16:

Here they are today, 05/02/16:

Thanks everyone! Fishorama- I can't tell the difference in nitrates mainly because I can never decipher between 5, 10 and 20ppm on my API master test kit. Measuring nitrates just before I do my weekly fin-level WC on this tank still shows a pale orange on the test kit. I just call it 20ppm given I've got the adult oscar and severum in this 75g tank. It's really anywhere between 5-20ppm. Given the growth rate of this plant, it's got to be using trace amounts of nitrates.

I hear ya! My old test kit kept coming up bright red, didn't matter how much water I changed out. After being told the reagents go bad after 6 months, I bought a new kit and promptly got the same results. Changed out more water, got the same bright red results. Another massive water change, still bright red. Only time I've seen a difference in color was when I removed and cleaned the filter in addition to a serious tank cleaning/water change. I pay close attention to my fish because the nitrate test is pretty difficult to read.

That pothos obviously likes "fish water"! LOL! I water plants with the water I take out of my tank.
