Tubifex Worms Anyone?

Ok, I did some more research and live tubifex worms seem pretty risky because of their disease and parasite carrying likelihood. Maybe I need to think about raising black worms instead. I'll keep reading and thinking.

Black worms are pretty much the same thing, and they are quite easy to raise. I always try getting them to survive in my tanks, but the fish seem to be able to find every last one :/ Except my guppy tank, they seem to be surviving in the sand without the guppies wiping them out. But then, I did introduce the worms to the tank before adding any fish... that might have helped.

Qwe123, that's EXACTLY what I was considering... guppies and all! I was concerned about the depth of the tank being a problem for the black worms based on what I was reading about raising them. So they do fine in a regular tank with guppies and a sand substrate? What size tank is yours?

20 gallon, 2 male and 4 female guppies with a bunch of fry, and I used pool filter sand to be more specific...

They barely stick out of the sand since they are in danger of being et...

None of your LFSs have them? That's where I get mine. I'd totally send you some, but I just checked to see if I have enough, and I guess I spoke too soon for them surviving with guppies... can't find one in there now :/

If you don't have a source available, I could buy some and ship them to you... I'd have to check on the price. Or if you know enough people in your area for a group buy: http://www.aquaticfoods.com/LiveBlackwormsM.html

There is only ONE LFS within 30 miles of me. I shop there, but the "fish lady" is not the most friendly lady I know. She asked me for a list of things I was looking for and I never heard back. She was so sour-faced when I met her, I'm not shocked. I own a business, and people like her are the ones I eliminate from the schedule.

I had looked at this link before. I'm just not sure I would need such an amount of worms. I could be wrong though. I have 3 tanks. What do you think? I only know one person in the vicinity with a tank. I could ask her if she wants some I guess.

Need that much? I'm sure not... But I'd gladly take that much in a heartbeat if it weren't for the hefty price tag, lol. I'll try to price out how much it would cost if I got some from my LFS and send them to you.

Tubifex worms are pretty dirty and parasite ridden.

Go for black worms! they are hearty in the aquarium and do everything you are hoping the tubifex to do.
