Can anyone tell me if tuffa rock makes your water hard because my friend gave me some to help raise my ph, which is fine now but the water is very hard about 20ppm instead of 0-3ppm any ideas?

Tuffa Rock??? Is that a US thing or a nickname?

Some rock for example Limestone will increase your waters hardness, it really does depend on what its made of?

I think you are referring to "Tuff" which is a type of volcanic rock that can look like anything from black glass to white chalk. It will assuredly raise the PH of your tank water but I have no idea if it will make your water hard.

Maybe someone knows if silica will make water hard, since tuff would leach this into the water?

ive looked up tuffa rock and it is a calceaous rock but it didnt say what it did, it is white with lots of holes in it i would say it probably is volcanic the holes probably formed as it cooled.Ive got some malowi /bog wood to put in the tank as this is supposed to soften the water but im not sure if i should take out the two bits of rock as it looks really good and my ph is spot on.As for the silica i,m not sure what that is or if its in tuffa rock anyone know?thanks for replying guys;)

If the rock has calcuim in it, Then it will raise the hardness of your water, Also it would be worth while checking your PH as it may raise that alittle.

What are you wanting to keep in the tank, As alot of fish dont mind water params that much as long as there stable?

I,ve got three lace gourami,3 angelfish,2 loach,1 cherry barb,1 neon,1 siamese fighter,2 serpae tetras and three peppered catfish i had about another 20 assorted fish but my tank(48") went cloudy the ammonia shot thru the roof ,i managed to stablise it and saved the above fish my friend gave me tuffa rock to bring the ph back to norm but ive got hard water now but if you think it wont matter i will just leave it in.The nitrite is ok,the ph is ok,the ammonia is ok just hard water, what do you think mate?:D

As far as I know none of those fish will be to bothered by water hardness to much. As I said the most important thing is the water stays at stable levels of ammonia, Nitrite, GH/KH, etc, etc.

Water hardness only comes to real importance, when breeding or keeping specialist fish like Discus.

I would give the rock a real good clean and try it in your tank. If you have a test kit take a PH and GH reading before adding it, then give it a few days to a week and see what te readings say. If your not happy with the levels just remove the rock.

Hope that helps alittle, It may be worth searching the forums or placing another thread just to double check my info about hardness (as I am still a bit of a noob at this myself :))
