Airstones aren't a *need*...at least not in most tanks but they can help in many areas, given they are used properly. I have some tanks that NEVER had airstones in them and then I have the majority that have always had airstones with them...either way, the fish have stayed healthy.
I keep some goldfish and goldfish need high amounts of oxygen, and they like a stronger current so I always provide air stones for these fish but like RTR said, they aren't nessessary for most fish.
