No doubt.
Those poor guys get dumped in the pond by my house all the time.
Which isn't even a pond. The city was quite surprised when they went to clean out the "water retention area" (that's what they call it) and found animals in there. Goldfish, Plecos, and Red eared sliders are the most common.
It's gross. Over-flow for the canal that is running parallel to the park, so it doesn't flood the city streets... or neighboring freeway.
It's sad. And now they're keeping turtles in bowls. What will we see next?
Green Iggys are #2 on the list. They really didn't show up till the early 90's. I think it's pretty safe to say that RES have had decades of abuse before them.
I feel sorry for red eared sliders. So many of them are definitely abused and neglected.
Why does it seem that the animals that get big (RESs, goldfish, plecos, etc.) are the ones that are pushed for beginners and sold to be kept in small containers? :headshake2:
I would definately put goldfish at the top of the list for abuse... they have been abused and kept in fish bowls since the day the hobby was thought of... the first fish ever domesticated
though I admit the turtle thing really sucks... a reptile, or amphibian has to have more emotions and feelings than a goldfish anyway no doubt
