turtle people! i need your help!

that's actually the UV light, and it's just there temporarily... it doesn't quite put out enough heat for basking. the floating basking dock is only about 70, instead of the 80 i was shooting for... i should be able to get another light stand this weekend (he only had one yesterday), and then the basking light will go there and the UV light will be brought out to cover more of the tank in "sunlight". i'm pretty sure i can get the basking light to cover both the rock and at least the near end of the log. he does like the log, and that makes me very happy, but he also LOVES floating right at the end of the ramp, amoungst the frogbit there. (he's also started eating the frogbit, and the drowned crickets- woot!)

i'm really pleased with how it's all turned out. and now that he's showing a healthy interest in the frogbit, i'm looking for more floaters for him to chew on as well as hide in. he really loves playing hide and seek in there lol

You can always go to a hardware store and pick up a cheap clamp lamp housing and use a regular old 75 watt bulb for the basking area. As long as you get the basking area in the high 80's you'll be fine with whatever you do.

oh, i have the bulb and clamp- he just didn't have another one of those sweet stands to attach the lamp to. i could just sit the light on the screen, but as i move the screen a lot to put crickets in and fiddle with the heater and such, it'd be a pain to have to move the lamp every time. =)

the VA F&W service lists the natural food habits of juvenile ERCs as "Crustaceans, Trichoptera, and Perciformes".... what exactly can i give him that will stay closer to this nature? (as i said above, he does eat crickets in addition to the frogbit... he seems to wait for them to drown themselves, then nibbles on them.)

Do you mean live food? FW shrimp, earthworms, aquatic insect larvae and snails.

yeah, i would prefer live food. don't want him to become dependent on having food literally handed to him. hunting instincts are good! ^_^

Make sure the turtle gets all it's needed vitamins and minerals from a good turtle pellet like Reptomin as well.

i've been offering the reptomin baby turtle food, but he has no interest in it at all. even leaving it in overnight, he takes no bites. i have given him little bits of the frozen turtle food, with the plants, algae, and vitamins in it. he eats a little of it, but not much so far.
