Buying a new, better filter for my RES tank tomorrow...but what kind? I think I've heard canister filters are best for turtle tanks...anyone know for sure? And if its in a 55gal. tank should I get something thats good for 3x times that gallonage? Its going to eventually have a 75gal. though...

Yes, canister filters are the way to go with water turtles. Spend the money and go for over filtration since turtles are so messy.
WOW those canister filters are expensive! I looked at some today, intending to buy but I can't afford one! And the highest rated one was for a 100gal. tank so on my 55gal. that would be less than 2x the gallonage...granted though my tank isn't full to the top so I'm not sure how much water is really in the tank. I guess I could get on one of those calculator websites to figure the amount of water thats actuallly in my tank. But the 100gal. one was like $200!

Would a Rena XP3 be good in my 55gal. tank or would it be too much filtration (if there is such a thing). On BigAls they have a Rena XP3 for $90 and it says its rated for up to 175gal. and with shipping it would only be a total of $100...which is $100 less than the best canister filter Petsmart had in store the other day (which didn't even go up to 175gal. by the way). It won't be too long before this 55gal becomes a fishtank and the turtle's tank will get upgraded to a 75 where I hope it can live in for a long time. So whatever filter I get I want it to be able to acommodate at least 2x bigger than a 75gal. so I need to get something rated at least 150. But if everyone thinks this filter is a good choice and a good price then I'll order it tonight!
I have a Rena XP2 I ran on my 56 gallon saltwater tank and I loved it. I bought it online at Petsmart for like $70 shipped back in Jan. I'd just buy the XP3, it is a decent filter, easy to clean, rinse-able pads, and the replaceable fine ones aren't too expensive. If you order it, see about ordering some extra filter pads with it, that way to have spares as the stores sometimes cost a bit more.
the xp3 is a good filter and would work well for the turtle tank for a while. You may want to use a HOB filter for mechanical-only filtration as well.
