He is pretty small. Maybe 3 inches. Her cousin bought it for her in Virginia Beach about a year ago. I knew about the legality thing, so I had and still have no idea how they got it because he was even smaller initially. We have decided to go with a 50 gallon tub to keep him in. As far as DIY filters go, how is this one:

*Edit: I am looking at this filter because we definitely need something internal. Floor space is a premium, so doing the same king of setup in an external 5 gallon isn't really possible.
We intend to learn from our mistakes and make sure this turtle gets nothing but the best care from now on. (Or soon anyway. I'm leaving for an archaeology field school for the month of June, and she's leaving for a study abroad trip in Australia soon after. So I won't be able to start work on the new tank until July)
