Two Filters?

Hello all! I have a 10 gallon tank that I took home from college over Christmas break. Something must have happened during transport back to college because the lights in the hood don't work now. When I priced a new hood, buying a whole new tank setup was only five dollars more, so I went that route (I had broken the tank on my way home from college, but the fish wasn't in that tank!). I'm planning on taking the "old" 10 gallon tank home for when I take Magellan home so that I don't have to lug the whole tank home again (I already have a QT tank set up here, so I won't be needing the 10 gallon for that).

Anyway, my question is this. The new tank came with a 5-15 gallon filter, as did my first tank. I was wondering if it would be better for my tank if I put both filters in the tank or if that would be too stressful for my Betta. He likes to play in the currant, but the 10 gallon tank is so small that the two are side by side and I was wondering if it would be too much of a current for him?

What type of filter brand are the filters? You are right in thinking that to much current is possible. I would probably only add the one filter especially if he is the only one in the tank.
 
If the Betta is the only thing in the 10 gallon, I wouldn't mess with it. His bioload won't be so incredibly high that the filter will be necessary if you do weekly water changes. It's not really worth messing around with another piece of equipment.
 
The new filter is an Aqua-Tech Power Filter and the older one is a Tetra filter. Both are for 5-15 gallon tanks.

Also, I'm planning to go next week to get two mystery snails, if that makes a difference.
 
i would think it would be too much current. bettas like still water on top so they can build their nests. also with the long fins they cant swim very well in turbulent water. try keeping just one and see if it is enough filtration.
 
Sounds good! Thanks for all of your advice! I was just wondering because most places I've read have said that the more filtration you have the better, and since I have two filters now I didn't know if they would be better or not. There's never been a problem with just one before, so I think I'll stick with that.

The 2 snails will more than double your bioload. You only really need one of those filters but when you go home for spring or summer, it would be nice to be able to carry along a cycled filter. Might just anticipate the times you will be gone and put the extra filter on ahead of time. Those are small enough filters that I would not expect them to bother your betta.
 
nah only 1 fish + two snails in a a 10g will be fine with one filter.
a different story when there is heaps of fish though
