I believe that silver and marbled hatchets are different species - are they likely to co-exist happily or even school when in the same (63 US gallon) tank? I appreciate that they differ in size.

two hatchets do not a school make. you'll need 6-8 or more to achieve the full behaviour of these fish.

liv2padl - we inherited a solitary silver hatchet and whilst I appreciate that there really needs to be 6+ neither of the reputable lfs has had any silver for many weeks but do stock marbled. We do want to increase the population at the top of the tank and would rather not dispose of the silver hatchet.

yup, the two species of hatchets will school. Just be aware that the silvers get to about 3 inches max, while marbles stay at 2 inches. They will still school, but I'm just letting you know for stocking considerations :)

plah831 - many thanks, we will give it a try (we do appreciate that the silvers are considerably larger than the marbled).
