Two Newb Questions

Gouramis are the same family as bettas and do not generally tolerate others of their kind too close. The general exception to that seems to be chocolate gouramis.

Dwarf gouramis do make fine community fish. They will work best in groups if the ratio is 1 male to 2 or more females. But female gouramis are hard to find right now as they are not colourful and attractive like the males (well I like the look of them but the people that sell them don't think most would enjoy owning them).

If you are getting a 50 gallon tank then I would wait until that time and the tank is setup. Then add any new gouramis at that time.

Also check out the newspaper and ebay in your local area, sometimes you can get really cheap used tanks! And I would hold off on getting any more fish until you get a bigger tank and/or a test kit! Good luck

Yeah, I had planned not to add any more fish after the gourami.

The newpaper idea is great! I never thought of looking there. I've just been lurking my local Good Will (saw a 100gal there a few months ago, too bad I wasn't into this hobby then).

As for the fish: They're doing great. I did a 20% change today nad now the gourami is almost constantly active. The two plattys (a male female) seem to get along pretty well, the male will chase the female around the tank for a few minutes sometimes so with any luck I'll have a few fry floating about in the next few weeks. I'm really interested in what they'll look like as the two parents would/will be different colors.

Thanks for the help guys. :)
