Two platies, what next?

We're getting some algae. Is there a good algae eating fish that would work in our 10-gallon aquarium with the two platies? Or would you recommend something else? We've had the tank for about two months. We had other fish (two mollies and a swordtail) that sadly succumbed to a combination of my inexperience and foul play....

are the platies male and female? if so in no time you will have a tank full of platie fry.

I'm not sure. I think they are both females. One was pregnant when we got her (the guy said, This one is fat and healthy!), so at least now I recognize a pregnant platy. We weren't prepared for the fry, so....

feed less, add a plant or two (plenty of low light types) and save your space in a 10g for fish you enjoy watching. Not saying Ottos can't be such fish, but they are delicate and do add to your fish count thus reducing another fish.

I assume your doing regular cleanings, so that isn't the problem....but my other suggestions will help as much as a otto.

If you get otos make sure that you get at least three since they play better and will be happier if they are maintained in a group. They are sensitive to water quality so make sure that is where it should be if you decide to go that route.

for a tank of your size, get a snail. they wont bother the platies, they will eat the algea, and they wont contribute to the bioload.

Hehe.....you must be referring to the non-pooping variety of snails.....they just hold it and explode after a year!
