alright... so I'm getting my diatom issues looked after... I'm not running ANY white light in the tank.. Antinc only for now... phosphates are only at 1ppm.

however, my questions have nothing to do with this...

I'm looking at adding more fish to the tank in coming weeks.. I'm thinking a sand sifter goby.

what one would be a good choice for my tank?
I have cleaner shrimp, 4hermits, 1astrea, 1 clown

also, I know that having bristle worms in the tank are a good thing.. and I have several of them...

but my question is this; when is it time for them to come out SIZE wise I mean... I rearranged my tank the other day... and there was one that had to be at least 6 inches long!!! it was HUGE... I didn't know what to do about it either.

so I figure I'd post it here and see what you guys have to say.

see.. I have more...

clown behavior...

I bought a clown in Dec... originally I bought two.. but one passed on...

however, this clown only hangs out in the front of the tank, he NEVER swims in or around the LR. and when he/she sleeps.. its next to the filter ON ITS SIDE????

as well.. it won't go anywhere near the cleanershrimp I have in the tank... its like he/she is terrified of it.

is this normal??

thanks all!!

I'd wait a bit longer before you put a sand sifter goby in, they need a pretty established tank to provide the number of pods they need.

As far as bristleworms go, I've heard people say get rid of them if they're thicker than a pencil but I think they're fine as long as they're not causing any noticeable damage.

The clown is just living up to it's name I think lol. As long as it's looking healthy/active I wouldn't be too worried. What are you tank params? Anything changed recently? What did the other clown die of?

I can't help you much with the other questions, but I can tell you I absolutely love my pink spotted watchman goby. He has an awesome personality, and he isn't skiddish at all. He doesn't hide all day, and actually rules the tank. When I first got him he picked up all of my hermits and snails and piled them in front of his cave. After the first day he grew tired of the hermits walking away, and he would have to get them again, so he finally left them alone. I think he would do well with you tank mates. He sifts the sand a lot, pilling it where ever he wants it, but he also swims around a lot too.

There are so many cool gobies, I am sure you won't go wrong picking one. I just think some are more out going than others.

As for the bristle worms, I keep checking to see if someone answered you because mine kind of freak me out and I would not be to disappointed if my population dwindled a bit. I need to find something that eats them, or at least a way to remove the biggest creepy ones.

Sorry I can't help you with the clown. I don't have one yet.

Definately wait before you add anything else just to make sure your params are OK. I definately recommend sleeper gobies. I have a sixspot and he's full of character especially when he opens his mouth for the shrimps or cleaner wrasse to do their jobs!!! Gobies don't eat pods! They eat mysis, brine, mussel basically most of the frozen foods that are available.

The bristleworms are fine until they get really really chunky!!

My clown does exactly the same. Even when she didn't have her anemone to look after, she always stayed at one end of the tank.

Gobies do eat pods, as do most fish if they get a chance.

ok... I have no plans to add a fish right now... I'm thinking inside the next month or so.

I have to wait for my tank to settle down after all of the issues I had with it.

I was curious about the bristle worms, cause some of them are getting REALLY big!

as for the clown.... what would you suggest to help it feel more "at home" in the tank?

is there an anemone that will fit or do well in a 14gallon tank?

or something that will host the clown?

thanks!

You don't have a huge amount more room for fish in that tank. Add one more and I'd say you're at your limit. Nano tanks are really difficult to keep stable so I'd be checking your parameters regularly to make sure the environment is stable for the clown, it may be a stress reaction. There are no anemones that are suitable for a 14g tank, you need 40g minimum imho. The clown doesn't need to host anything to feel comfortable. If it's a tank raised clown (not wild caught) it might not host, even if one is provided. Concentrate on giving it a stable environment and you can't go far wrong.

Matt.

Clowns don't really swim around like other fish, they like to stay in the same place their whole life. My clown swims in one small area and also sleeps by the filter on its side, almost out of the water. The other fish leave him alone and he stays in his special place.

For your bristleworm...yes they are good for your tank, but at a certain population number or size they may become a pest and/or make you squeamish. A great way to remove unwanted ones is very carefully at night with a turkey baster.

Like everyone else said...clowns are strange! As long as it is eating and acting "normally" it is probably fine. Mine used to sleep on their sides at the top of my tank, but now they are hosting my BTA and never leave it.
