im my 75 gallon, i have an aquaclear 500, a maxi jet power head, (not sure the model, one of the more powerful ones around 300 gph i think), and a redsea prizim protein skimmer. i have around 10 pounds of live rock(getting more sunday), and about 40 pounds of base rock(most has been in there since christmas), 30 lbs of live sand, the rest is play sand, and 15 lbs of crushed coral, and a yellow tang is the inhabitant(more coming tommorrow), andyways, my first question is this: should i take out the carbon cartradge from the ac 500? or is that providing a place for bacteria to colonize?(its not a new carbon pack either)

and my second question is this: i am going for a trip in a few weeks for a week. what should i do for the vacation period?

thanx

You'll have to feed the tang unless it's got a bunch of algae to munch on. I'd invest in an auto feeding system rather than trusting a non-fish keeping friend. The carbon filter probably isn't doing much for you at this point carbon pores probably plugged up after 3 months. Yes it has bacteria etc growing in it but, you have a lot more in your sand, live rock and even the base rock by now. Make sure the live rock you add is completly cured if you have fish ,"especially the tang", or you'll lose a bunch of fish. Unless you relly trust your lfs 100% I'd have them run a water test to make sure there is very little amonia, nitrate and nitrite. If they won't a lot of times the nose knows if it stinks don't buy it should be a slightly fishy salty odor but, not a stink.
hth and congrats

thanx for your reply, i do trust my lfs, and the rock has been sitting in their tank for 2 weeks because it was soo over priced hehe.

how much do the automated feeding systems cost?

well I have a little battery powered pro-aquatics 30 day auto feeder it cost around $45. I've never used it for 30 days either though. I don't know that I'd trust the battery for 30 and I'd also make sure it was working correctly before I left. Of course I'd do that regardless of cost of unit or brand. I will say that I've had mine for a while and had no issues maybe other people have though.

i dont really vacation too much, you think its worth it? is it that hard to teach people how to feed them?

i took the carbon pack out today, trying to see if this will lower my nitrates.
