OK, so my friend and I both set up a saltwater tank at the same time. Both tanks are 37gal, we both started with the same live rock and the same live sand from the same LFS. the only difference is that he used a hang on filter and less sand. I am using two power heads, one for cirulation over the live rock, and the other as a under sand filter with a deep sand bed. we both have help from the LFS and a friend who has been doing salt and reef tanks for over 15 years.

as for fish, i have two damsels, two clowns and two camel shrimp, two fire fish, 4 left handed hermits, one Blue Gudgeon Dartfish (Ptereleotris heteroptera) one brittle star and two astral snails.
he only has 3 damsels, one brittle star, 4 left handed hermits, and 2 large turbo snails.

looking at his tank he has tiny tube worms all over the glass, the rocks, sand and the snails. he also has tiny things cruising around the sand, and tin snails on the glass.
I have nothing on the glass, on the sand, or on the rocks. although I have alot of coraline, and some other stuff like some Halimeda Plant on some of the rock, and some other little stuff on there.

Well finally getting to my question, why does he have all the small stuff cruising around his tank, and is it a good thing that I dont have all this stuff? my guess is that I have more fish. but my tank still looks a hell of alot better ;)

Well, I'm about 6 months in on my 46 gallon and I have pods everywhere, when the lights go out, they come out of everywhere! I don't know if the deep sand bed has any effect but I have crushed coral in the bottom and they are everywhere! Another possibility I could think of is that one or some of your livestock is eating the small stuff. There are a couple of others in here that know about that more and can maybe let you know. I'm just spitballing here but maybe you could trade a scoop of sand with your friend and introduce some of what you are looking for into your tank.

Camel shrimp are NOT friendly to the micro fauna of any tank. They'll eat just about everything they can catch.

Is there a difference on how you take care of your system then he? Predation and water quality will have an effect on detrivores, meaning you may have clean water quality compared to your friend.
