type of bulb??

My bulb went out on my 55g, and i was wondering if I could just get a bulb that fits from a hardware store instead of paying twice as much at a pet store for "fish" bulb, i'm not growing any thing in there, and i have 5 convicts
 
I'm going to get lfamed for this I'm sure, but I'm gonna say yes. Unless you've got a planted tank, I don't think the type of bulb matters that much.
 
If anyone flames you, they're foolish. Yes, bulbs from hardware stores can be great for light, even growing plants. Home Depot carries 5500K and 6700K (I think that's their rating) bulbs for $4-5 each. Your fish don't really care what kind of light there is.
 
You can always try those special lamps that people use to grow marijuana plants in their home.

i have regular flourescent lamp in one of my tanks, i have stem plants there that are growing :o

so i think yes
 
I say yes. As long as this is not a planted tank you should be fine with any bulb that is rated safe for that fixture. Lights on the tank are mainly for our viewing pleasure unless of course it is a planted aquarium. That is a completely different story. I say shop around and see what you can find.

The standard bulb will work fine. In fact, for most low light plants it will provide adequate lighting.
