what setup should i have for an electric yellow in a 50 gallon tank?

Lots of hiding places (rocks, caves, etc) and a sand substrate would be preferred.

would small gravel be equivalent to sand?

You can use crushed coral or aragonite sand as substrate. Both are great for African cichlids and good pH buffers for the water quality they need.

very small size gravel will be fine but i would shoot for aragonite or crushed coral..

I have gravel and it works fine. Crushed coral is recommended but either one will work. You will want to add some rock work and set it up so that there are caves... You also want to put the rocks in to help keep the PH up....

You also want to put the rocks in to help keep the PH up....

That depends on the kind of rocks you are going to use. Texas Holey Rocks and reef base rocks, will help to keep the pH up; Slate rocks and round river rocks for example, will not help on that.

And also depends on where you are starting from with tapwater as regards Ph and hardness- you may not need a buffer at all.
