I have six Tanganyikan cichlids in my tank. Do I have to always get Tanganyikans or can I get a cichlid from a different lake. And what kind of alge eater do I have to get for a cichlid tank.
You can mix them with fish that have similar water requirements -- which mostly means other Rift Lake cichlids. Just be sure to research food requirements and territory/aggression issues to avoid problems. (Some cichlid purists abhor mixing cichlids from different Rift Lakes, but that's primarily an aesthetic concern.)
As for algae eaters... I've pretty much given up on algae eagers for my Rift Lake tanks. The best candidates are usually bristlenose plecos, but I don't really care for their look in a Rift Lake tank, and I don't find algae growth to be that big of a problem. Common plecos poop too much and get lazy about algae removal as they get larger. I usually handle algae removal myself and get a couple of bottom feeding synodontis catfish. They do quite well with cichlids. Syn. petricola or Syn. multipunctatus do well with cichlids and they are commonly available. They also don't get too large. Both species are best kept in groups of 3 or more.
I think the biggest question is which tanganyikan fish you have and in what kind of tank. It also depends on whether you want to breed them and there are different food requirements for certain fish. Kyle
I have two lamp brichardi, two lamp caudopunctatus, and two julie transcriptus, gombi. I want to be able to breed as well as get some more colorful cichlids in my 75 gallon tank.
I know there are certain types of ciclids, provided there is enough space that are peacefull, from my experience parrot ciclids, and many south american cichlids are fine.
