WOW, that's really amazing! When I was learning sign language, one of my professors taught us fingerspelling (literally, spelling out words using your fingers). At first, we would try to read every letter, which makes about as much sense as reading English that way (we'd see a-p-p-l-e rather than 'apple'). Soon, he told us, we would learn to recognize the shape of the word and not need to separate every letter. I didn't really translate that in to the way written English works until now - that paragraph was easy to read, it's phenomenal how language works! :)
