Unless the fish are a species that does not tolerate salt at all (i.e. corydoras) you'll be fine.

what other species dont tolerate salt well? ive got two clown loaches, and a pleco (we will be getting bigger tanks for them when they get bigger, dont worry), will this effect them more or hurt them? if so, what can i do about it, because they need to be treated aslo.

i did the salt treatment with scaleless fish like loaches and catfish and they were just fine. Especially if it's only for a few weeks. It's still much safer than using any kind of chemical on those sensitive guys.

Corydoras are the only ones listed on the aquarium salt I used (Doc Wellfish).

Doing a quick google search, you should be fine with the loaches and pleco.

Keep in mind also that you may see more spots initially as the ich on the fish matures - ich tends to get worse before it starts to get better.

another question.

when i start to incorporate the salt into the aquarium, do i need to have the water level down to a certain point so the addition of the salt doesnt make the water overflow? like 15 percent or so?

not sure if that makes sense...lets see...if i have the water in the tank at regular full level, adding something in will make it too high...so how much water should i take out to let it be at normal level after adding all the salt?

Just take the water you are going to dissolve the salt in directly out of the aquarium. Like, fill a one or two gallon container with tank water, and then dissolve the salt in that - then add the mixture of salt and tank water back to the aquarium. You'll notice as the salt concentration goes up, the salt will take longer to dissolve. Just keep mixing and it will dissolve.

if only 1 or 2 fish of a community hace ich is it ok to treat the whole tank or would i need to buy a seperate hospital tank and cycle it all over and whatnot?

disisgustavo - You'll want to treat the whole tank - once ich is in the tank, the whole tank needs to be treated as well as all the fish in it, even ones without symptoms.

the only aquarium salt i could find was the API brand (aquarium pharmaceuticals), and it says to add one tablespoon full per 5 gallons...would that equal out to the 2 teaspoons per gallon that you were suggesting? or should i just follow the 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons because it is different than the brand that you were telling me about?
