Ugly worms in my sustrate

i once had a leechin a 55 gal tank that likely came in with live blackworms i was feeding. i was there for some time. the only reason i found it was b/c of the extra suction on on the magnum that i was siphoning the gravel with. eew.

Yep I have had seen 2 in my tank... when they come loose from the gravel they float at the top and usually are seen stuck to the glass right above the waterline.... I got myself a gravel vacuum or if you dont have that atleast stir up the gravel a few times and let the filter get the extra food.

Has it struck anyone yet that leeches and worms don't look the same? I've had freeze dried bloodworm larve introduce other worms into my tank, but if we're talking larger dark leech like things.... Flukes... Start pulling up flukes on the net and I'll bet you find a match. Gill flukes, eye flukes, scale flukes... that's a really good possiblity, brought in either on your koi, goldfish, or even the pleco. BTW I'm glad you have a bigger tank. The pleco dies if it can't grow normally, and they get 2 feet long. Check into the flukes, and treat accordingly.

Do you feed any frozen foods???

I had the some problem (per description) and it was because I overfed frozen bloodworm and they thawed and grew in my substrate.

I thought bloodworms were actually Mosquito larva, they wouldnt just live in the water as worms. Plus I highly doubt that they would survive after being frozen.

arent leeches the only ones who can suction one end to the tank glass? end, meaning posterior or anterior..

mine was definitely a leech, but please correct me if i am misinformed!

Planaria can attach to glass, hydra comes to mind, and flukes can do it too.

I don't know about bloodworm, but I do about brine shrimp. I took a 15g that had been sitting dry in the basement all summer to school one spring, filled it with warm water, and the next day had sea monkeys!
