I posted a couple days ago about my Blackskirt that was extremely bloated. I thought she was full of eggs, because she looked the same as when she had been full of eggs previously.
I fed peas to make sure it wasn't constipation and she just seemed to get bigger.
Well, I got home from work today and I think she has dropsy :(
She's been Isolated and is getting treated with salt right now, but I think I may have caught it too late.
Has anyone ever seen dropsy on a Blackskirt tetra before? I was completely ignorant and overlooked the possibility that it could be Dropsy.
I'm continuing treatment, and will hope for the best..
Suggestions?
Thanks
-Emily

I've had dropsy in a couple of bettas, and they always die. It's hard because when it first shows up you think it's just constipation..by the time you realize it's dropsy, it's too late to do anything about it.

I'm not sure how salt works for treating dropsy...it's a fluid retention thing and in people anyway..salt makes you retain even more... If the same is true for fish, I would think no salt would be better....but, I am NO expert in the treatment of anything really..lol...so getting some info from someone who knows better is a safer bet...

Most of what I have read though says that once they get to that stage where it's obviously dropsy...not much you can do...

I won't even mess with Dwarf Gourami's anymore because of Dropsy. In 25 years of fish keeping I have never been able to save a fish that had this disease.

Follow up with some sad news.
My fish died last night :(
I'm sad because I have had her for over a year, and I feel it was my fault I didn't catch it in time.
At least shes not suffering anymore though...

RIP Blackskirt tetra. :( She's in fishy heaven now.

sorry for your loss, hope that your next lil friend has a long healthy life!!!
Its hard on us when we dont know the nature of our pets illness, but at least you cared(think about those who would have just flushed or tossed her), and now she is happily swimming under rainbow bridge!!!!

Its easy to get attached, they are like little dogs or cats, just with gills and scales.

i have a fish i acquired that we decided was a black skirt in need of a good home. if you are in the Los Angeles area, maybe you could adopt a fishy!
