Does anyone know much about UGFs? Can't find much info about them anywhere. The main thing I am trying to find out is using a power head w/one. Is it better to use it in normal flow, or reverse? I had this setup a couple years ago in my 29g w/reverse flow, but I lost 2 bettas and a snail due to getting sucked into the intake. I have an AquaClear 802 and the intake is pretty powerful. If it is better to have it in reverse flow, is there anything I can do to keep my fish away from it? I've had this tank regoing for about 2 months now. I have the UGF in it, but just using the riser tubes right now.

If anyone has any ideas on this, please let me know. I am open to any suggestions.

This is my first posting (hope I did this right). This is first forum I came across where everyone (well, almost everyone) seems to be all friends just trying to help your buddy out.

Thanks, Criag

Hey Craig, welcome to AC! Yeah, we're all buddies just trying to help each other out! One of the best tools here is the search button at the top right of each forum page. There are many threads on RUGF (reverse under gravel filtration). You may not have seen it, but inquiries about equipment should go into the DIY forum. Don't sweat it...just don't do it again;):D

I use one on my 15gallon. Penguin makes a kit that comes with a long strainer and sponge that fits over it, plus an adapter that goes over the output of the powerhead and over various diameter uplift tubes. The water is filtered before it goes under the plate and keeps it much cleaner. I don't know if it would fit an AC power head or if AC makes a kit. Try searching DIY forum. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Didn't realize there was so many pros & cons about using UGFs. I cut a piece of sponge and used rubber bands to fasten it around the intake. This seems to be working just fine. Might upgrade to a Penguin though. From what I've read, they seem to be better, and have more accessories for them.

Also, sorry Bill. Never noticed the search button before. Guess I was to busy reading through the forums to notice it.

Thanks RTR. Very informative info. To late to build a UGF like that, but when I upgrade to a bigger tank, I plane a using that then. :D
