Under gravel filter

What is filter floss?

Dont use filter floss with UGF systems, it will just clog and yo'll end up having to strip the tnak down.

For a 10G a UGF or RUGF would be my first choice.

Internals would clog up toomuch due to limited space and effects of debris in limited space

HOB also good option.

External cannister, prob unecessary for a 10G.

However, you can never filter too much.

IMO, go for UGF or RUGF. I like these systems because of the large surface area of bacterial filtration. I'm currently cycling a 10G; it has UGF and a small internal.

My 33G uses a external cannister, an internal and a UGF.

Thanks i'll give the prawns a try.

Well, okay, but be prepared for an odorous cycle! :)

Try a fishless with ammonia or media from an established tank.

And, I'm doing the prawns thing with my 10G right now, in fact in sitting at this PC with a peg on my nose and all the windows open!

My Wife has given me feedback on using this method, I might say!

I have a couple of established tanks and i will use some gravel from these to help speed up the cycling of the new tank. If prawns smell so bad does anyone have a suggestion for another source of ammonia?

I personly dont like RUGF because if you are planing on growing plants all of the stuff plants need to grow will be pushed out of the gravel and sucked up buy the HOB but set up the normal way are good for growing good bateria in your gravel, my suggestion if you are planing on useing an UFG and a HOB i would use it to run the under gravel filter and if you want to go one step further put a strainer like the one that comes with the HOB but a bit smaller between the two pipes and this will give you the best of both filters. To help cycle your tank ypu can buy good bateria in a bottle it will help establish the tank faster.

I have 6 planted tanks with RUGF. No issues. Sometimes we over analyse things.

I think it depends on the type of plants you are using.

For example, Amazon Swords like good stuff in the substrate and RUGF would blow this out. However, you could combat this with root tabs, you would just have to replace them more often than UGF...

Its a matter of choice, Bob is right dont overanalyze, generall plants will beOK with UGF or RUGF. If your worried, just make the substrate a little deeper.

My ideal filtration system is

UGF plates with an aairston filter at one end of tank and RUGF powerhead at the other for a push-pull UGF/RUGF; I'd love to experimentthis to see how it works.

Combine this with a HOB

And an internal.

And a Cannister.

And frequent water changes.

.............then I wake up..............
