Actually it won't simply because the flow reqired would be massive to have a greater effect than the powerheads or airlift already has. UGF's because of the large surface area entailed do not create heavy currents even when the flow rate of the UGF is high. I push 1200 GPH (rated flow) through my Big RFUG. My cannister only pulls around 4-5 hundred GPH my biggest HOB is 500 Rated GPH so flushing via a filter would not work as well in theory, and from what I've seen does not work as well in Practice either. The best scenario I've ever had was when I had pond snails living under the plates as they tended to stir things up a bit while looking for food. the last pond snail has long since died in that tank and I've not considered putting more under the plates as of yet. None of my current set-up are set in conventional direction, it would be a neat experiment to see if snails under the plates could help a conventional UGF long term, but right now I'm out of room for more experiments.
