What do you think about undergravel filtration? I will clean my tank's gravel every week. Is this a good idea or a bad idea. How should I install it in a 10 gallon established tank?

I just quit my job so I have a lot of free time now!!!! If I ever run out of time to maintain it, I will pay someone to clean it.
I have quite a few bucks in the bank account for emergencies, which if I don't get to clean the tank, I would use because that is considered an emergency, right??? !!!!!
Hey RTR, kind of a side note, but I'm going to build a OE-RFUG to run my brackish tank. Whats your take on using a canister to run the UG instead of a powerhead?

I have large aggressive type cichlids....I have undergravel filters on all my tanks.....mostly useless with the fish I have as they dig constantly..but, at least they get water circulation...LOL.....but, I have many canister and hang on filters on all my tanks as they're overcrowded....I don't think they're good enough for the only filtration but in alot of cases and kinds of fish they do help for biological and clarity....

sploke - why? A waste of a canister IMHO & IME, but I admit to having done so many years ago before Penguin came out with RF kits. The prefilter needs to be cleaned weekly to maintain flow and reduce nitrate accumulation. I am unwilling to open canisters every week to rinse when the RF kits, while ugly, are easy access.
toerag - the OE-RFUG technique in the article cited before was developed in part while I was in my Cichlid-breeding phase to avoid that issue.

My issue is that i'm setting up a brackish tank with a land area for some crabs. The rfug will be my main biofiltration, but I'm working on secondary mech filtration. The water line will be 5-6" below the tank surface, so I don't want to use a HOB filter. My second thought was the canister, but I see your point, esp if its going to be used primarity for mech. I guess the next option is some sort of internal filter like the Fluval plus series, or an Eheim aquaball.
