Sweet picture . . . just an idea, if you wanted, you could add 2 or 3 more cross bars, drilling holes in the PVC every inch or so. Put a layer of rigid plastic window screen over everything, then the substrate. It would add some water flowing up through substrate, additional to the water flowing over the top of the substrate from the jets.
