Hello AC i`m a newbie and i`m happy to be part of this one big aquatic forum. I have a 206 litre tank with a underwater filter with two powerheads (400 L/h) and i would like to know if this kind of filtration is a good idea...?
I think that would be about the same size as my 55 gallon. I've kept mine understocked for the past 7 years with nothing but undergravel filter with 2 powerheads and it's been fine (with monthly water changes).
If you're wanting to really load it up, you'll probably want more filtration. Depending on who you ask, you may be able to put a maximum of one inch of tropical freshwater fish per gallon... per 10 square inches of surface area... or per 12 square inches of surface area. If you're approaching these numbers, it might be a good idea to consider a secondary filtration system.
If you have coldwater-freshwater you'd want even fewer fish - probably half the numbers above - regardless of filtration.
Hello Heady,
I have a freshwater tank with 1.20 cm long. And i also have a canister filter (Sacem 1000 L/h).
I was informed that undergravel filters are good for well planted tanks, is this true ?
Thanks for the volume conversion table, it come in handy.
Some people will tell you undergravel filters are not good for planted tanks. However I have plants in mine and they are fine. In fact I practically had to take a hatchet to my hygro when it went totally out of control. What fish are you planning to have in there?
I picture roots getting in the plastic plates, and eventually slowing, or clogging the openings. Reducing it's effectiveness in holding debris in the gravel - and even worse, under the plastic plates where it cannot be vacuumed out.
