I just recently transfered my 29g freshwater tank to a 55g. I have an entire set-up for the 29g still but i want to do something unique this time. Anyone have any suggestions???

if i had an open 29g. . . . i would go completely tacky with it. white gravel, maybe with a bit of black or light blue gravel mixed in as an accent , pink and green fake plants, maybe some plastic/silk aquarium flowers, a japanese-style centerpiece, and a black moor goldfish.

my tanks now are all-natural. rocks, driftwood, live plants. i could definitely go for a change, but only a goldfish could suffer the kitsch without feeling like a moron.

im more into the environment aspect of my aquariums...so i was thinking more along the lines of a figure 8 puffer tank or a apistograma tank

biotope tank...

depending on fish..planted with structure..driftwood etc. apisto tank would be good idea.I got tired of community tanks and found myself gravitating to species tanks more along the lines of angels, discus etc..

I currently have a wild peruvian angel tank that is my favorite..it is planted with swords and a couple pieces of driftwood.

what could i keep with the appistos...i had heard that they thrive in soft highly acidic water?

they come from 'blackwater' meaning acidic..they do okay in neutral water pH 7.0 and a bit higher. you can add peat if you want to lower the pH .
some folks use RO water and re-add buffers to the water . to much of a pain for me..but I'm lucky here in that my water is neutral.
apistos I believe are harem spawners..meaning you can keep amale with several females.
generally a peaceful cichlid (unless spawning then they tend to exhibit the typical aggressive behavior typical of SA cichlids) dithers can include pencilfish, tetras hatchets etc. be careful about introducing other bottom dwellers..especially aroung spawning time.

there are really cool apistos out there ..unlucky me..not many lfs carry them and those that do are expensive(I can find discus cheaper..LOL)

Hey, we're in the same situation! I just recieved a free 29gal. I'm going to put a large school of neons, a ram and lot's of shrimp. That's the plan at least. Oh and with a sand substrate and lots of plants. It's gonna rock.

I'm more into angels discus and rams.
as far as puffer..I 'm not a lot of help but most of the puffers I'm aware of are pretty aggressive..best left alone..the only thing I would put in the tank is something I wanted the puffer to eat.

here's an interesting tid bit..while shopping at the local petsmart(which carries dwarf puffers) the gal working there bought some and based her purchase on the POP(point of purchase display) basically saying the puffer could be kept with other fish..she found out that the POP was incorrect..and now warns buyers to keep them in a small single fish tank.
