So after the loss of my BGK, I'm rethinking what I want my centerpiece fish to be. A gourami has been suggested, but here's what I'm looking for:

Not too big (should be comfortable in a 30g)
unique shape or color (my original "centerpiece" try was a BGK if that gives you an idea of what I'm talking about)
medium to top dweller (I've got kuhlis running the bottom dwelling scene)
not overly aggressive/fit for a multi-species tank

As for my tank, it's a freshwater tropical tank (I run it around 79 degrees F), with lots of plants, a fair amount of hiding crevices, and keeps a pretty steady 7.5 pH.

Some fish I was thinking of:
glass catfish (group of 'em)
pearly calvus or compressed cicilid (maybe.. sounds like they grow really big though :()

Any suggestions would be awesome!

I have read glass catfish are really sensitive to water quality changes. Just putting it out there so you don't have another BGK incident.

African butterfly fishare really neat. They are a top dweller, like hatchets are. They will eat live minnows and will take pellets and freeze dried blood worms. You do need a good tight cover or they could "fly" out of your tank.:eek:They have a see through membrane on their "wings".

I have a group (6) of glass cats in my 46 gal tank. They are pretty cool fish, but they do hide all day long. Once the lights go out, they're out and about in a flash. How about a baby whale ? I always wanted to try one of these, but my tank is so overstocked, I need about 20 of my tenants to kick the bucket before I could even think about it. You can find a picture of one on ****************. I have bought fish from them and never had a problem. Good luck.

You might want to also look at Hatchet fish. They look really cool.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Those hatchet fish and the african butterfly look pretty neat.

The other problem with those African cichlids (besides how big they grow) is that they need some hard, alkaline water...don't think kuhliis would be too big of fans.

Does anyone see a risk of African Butterflies eating kuhliis, or are they too far apart in the tank? That's the one risk I see with "specimen fishes" for that tank.

Yes, I do, Chil. Kuhlis tend to do loachy dance in the middle and even swim across the surface so they are at risk being eaten by African butterfly fish. My angels even chased a young kuhli loach in my tank thinking it's a worm.:lipssealedsmilie:
