Hello all,

I have a 55 gallon sub-tropic tank. All specs are fine and my fish are healthy except for my bluegill who i have been constantly having to quarentine because of his "coughing" motions and violently thrashing like trying to get some parasite off. I see no ich or clamped gills(he came from the most discusting pond ever) he eats, moves and acts okay.(except for condition stated above) I have treated him with prazipro,ich-x and i am starting a copper quarentine shortly.

Has anyone else kept these fish and seen these symptoms and how did u treat if a condition. He is a joy to watch in the aquarium and is a peacfull community fish(even though he is aggressive at feeding time :P)

A Bluegill is not a sub-tropical fish and the water may be too warm for him. Get it into a cooler tank (unheated) and see if it improves.

I live in a sub-tropic area. The tank is unheated and stays the temp of my house (73-75) I have seen little change in the temp since I have had the tank set up for 3.5 months. The bluegill came from a warm small pond so temp is not the issue. Although I will try your idea and see if it works.

From the symptoms (and lack of symptoms) gill flukes would have been my initial thought, but a proper treatment with praziquantel should have taken care of that. Copper is a good next course of treatment, but when I run across an apparent parasite that doesn't respond to milder measures I drop the bomb, trichlorfon, sold as Clout. It's serious stuff and will easily kill fish if misused, so follow the directions exactly. Btw you say your Bluegill is peaceful? Less than 6" right? Just wait!

Subrosa thanks for responce, is Clout the brand name? avaliable at most LFS? yea my bluegill is preety peacefull. He is now just about 7 inches and I got him when he was 1.5 inches. He can be aggressive but not to the point of stressing out the other fish, he only is aggressive in his territory and will nip at fish if they mingle around his territory(except my leopard ctenopoma who he is quite fond of.)

Yup, Clout is pretty readily available.

Thanks for the reply, here is an image of the bluegill. im not shure if it will work because all I have to photograph is my iphone. How do i upload images from my dektop onto the forum?

The pics are a bit fuzzy to be much help. You said that you're treating with copper. What product are you using? Not all copper meds are the same in formula or effectiveness. And are you using a test kit to monitor copper levels?
