I just bought a bag of 20 minnows for my snapping turtles. I look at the minnows to find a stunning little fish which appears to me to be either some sort of Bass or a Cichlid (maybe a Ram or a Jack Dempsey) It is a silver color with bright blue speccles all over it's body. The fish was too interesting to feed to my turtles so i put it in my aquarium. It gets along with my bloodfins well, it is usually chasing them. None of the bigger fish seem to mind it's presence. It is free from Ich and any other noticable sicknesses. If anyone has any idea what type of fish this is or has any ideas please let me know asap. I forgot to mention it is about an inch long. Thankyou

P.S. How can i take better picture of my fish

Can you try and get a clearer side view pic? And is that dark line the lateral line or is the fish just kind of see through?

It is a juvenile Lepomis sunfish. If you can get some clearer shots I might be able to tell you which one. Put the fish in a small container, put a lot of light on it (sunlight is great), and just snap a lot of pictures- that's the only way I know to get good fish shots.

Lepomis are pretty hardy and easy to care for as a general rule. They prefer cooler water (room temp) but can handle constant temps up to the low 80s F and brief swings well above that. They eat live prey in the wild; juveniles and some adults eat small inverts, adults of some species eat small fish and large inverts, such as crayfish. They can usually be switched to frozen, freeze-dried, and prepared foods. Depending on species, your fish may be anywhere from 5" to 14" long as an adult. The species most commonly found in feeder shipments tend to be the larger ones.

hey, no shame. If some people can be interested in fish from other continents, why can't some be knowledgable about our own fish?
