Unlevel aquarium

If you put a layer of quarter inch foam under your tanks this will correct any uneveness. Large sheets of the foam are available at local hardware stores for around 15 bucks and cutting it with a hot knife is the easiest. I have hardwood floors and both my tanks were uneven until I used the foam sheet.

My uncle had a 125 when I was about six or so. It was just freshwater community but I remember thinking how I always wanted to swim in it because it was so big! Anyhows it was unlevel about 3/4" after they moved into their new house. About a year after it was up I suppose the seals and whatnot were stressed and the entire tank came tumbling down. Have you ever spilled ONE gallon of water onto the floor? It spreads out quick. Imagine 125 of those! I thought my Aunt Wanda was going to have a come apart :argue:. Ever since then I've always always always made sure that my tanks were as level as possible!

post a pict of your set up. I would definatly try to level the tank using shims on the stand not the tank (it could cause pressure points) if the tank is too unlevel it's own weight could warp it untill the seems fail.

we have styrofoam sheets left from our basement(remodeling) would you reccomend i put one under my 235 gallon?

I have a 29 gallon that isn't exactly level (maybe 1/2" variance from end to end) due to having old floors in our house. I haven't had any problems with it stability-wise, and the only real concern is that I like to keep my water level high enough to where you can't see that it isn't level ;)

if my next tank isn't level though I'm going to do the styrofoam method to balance it out since it just seems like a good idea ;)

Styrofoam doesn't level things: it helps compensate for unevenness. If the two ends are level and there is a slight warp between them, some grit, any uneveness, then foam will make a more even bed.

If one end is a half an inch higher the foam isn't going to compress more on the lighter (higher) end to even things up.

Being out of level looks funny when it shows under the trim and can stress the seams in the tank, increasing the chances of a leak. I'd level it much as possible with shims. Foam cut to shape might help. The seams are pretty solid and folks seem to get by with slightly out of square tanks: there is some tolerance but if your tank is not level you're putting yourself at an increased risk.

I have a 120g tank and it's unlevel between 1/4 and 1/2 inch from front to back but is level from side to side should I be worry also the glass is 1/4 thick as well.
