Unplanted discus tank

I've had my 125g discus tank set up for the last 6 or 7 years with high light, co2, ferts and heavily planted. Lately I noticed that the discus didn't really care for the co2 and all the plants so I changed it to bare bottom. The discus seem to really love it. Also, after several years of "gardening" I was getting tired. It's a big tank and took a lot of maint. to keep it looking good. Anyway, I took a few pics:

I'll probably add a little more driftwood and maybe a potted crypt or two but I'm gonna keep it simple and easy to clean. The big male turq is already courting one of the RSG females...fingers crossed. The skinny little blue is an old fish that I don't have the heart to euth. so she gets to hang with the school as long as she lasts.

Whoa! That's a BIG difference! I can totally understand the wanting to streamline the maintenance of a tank that size and also to keep your fish happier. They look VERY happy! Gorgeous tank and fish - both planted and unplanted!

Crossing my fingers for happy discus courting, spawning and fry!

(Now with all the extra time you have since you have cut down on the maintenance time with that tank, you have time to finish painting the wall behind it! LOL :silly

They do Bob. They constantly roam from one end to the other now in stead of just hangin' around one spot.

I sold the plants at the GHAC auction the next day. I bought the wilds a couple at a time over the last year or so from Dan at Gulf Coast Discus. I'll probably eventually get two more greens.

Planted tanks are a lot of work. If you have the time and patience, they are worth it though. A group of discus and a large school of cardinals in a planted tank looks incredible.

I like it and it probably reflects their natural habitat much better as they tend to populate flooded areas and prefer subdued light(not great for plant growth)
