Unsettling behavior

Ok so I hurt one of the fins on my Angelicus loach a while ago, and I've been doing the best I can to keep the water clean to help his natural healing (water change tomorrow). However I can't help but notice that he is not eating. For fear of wasting food and stressing my cycle I decided to buy him shrimp pellets so he wouldn't have to compete with the other fish for food. I cannot help but notice however that he is not eating the pellets, despite that I drop them just outside his cave. Wouldn't he need nutrients to speed his healing? Is he just waiting to die? Also my honey gouramis are not eating as well which is equally unsettling. I have tried Cichlid flakes and Nutrimax flakes and nothing can tempt them. Could anybody please tell me if I am doing something wrong here? Or what might be going on?

I think you are doing a nice job for your fish! What did the loach like to eat before his injury? My Large clown will ignore the shrimp pellets and eat the worms or the dried small shrimp that I put into the tank, seems like that was what he was used to before I got him from another member on this site. The rest of my clowns devour the pellets. When I feed my fish I place small amounts of about 6 different foods to try to make them all happy. What about something irresistible like a small slice of cucumber, my loaches love that. Or have you tried the tiny freeze dried shrimp, my loaches love that too.

How is his fin looking?

It's great that you are keeping the water clean, that's the best thing that you can do. What are your water params?

I'm puzzled as to why your gouramis would not appear to be eating well, they usually like to eat.

I'm afraid I don't have time to test my params atm so sit tight for 10 hours and I'll get back to you. As for he loach he ate the cichlid flakes with the rest of my fish, but given that he is more or less turtling right now I didn't want to have to throw extra food in because I'm actually fish-in cycling atm. I've been netting out the shrimp pellets he doesn't eat:). But clowns eh? You a reefer? It's where I'm hoping to end up!

If you are cycling with fish you really need to test your water just about every day during the cycle. That is the only way you will actually know what is going on in the tank. If you do not have one already I would get an API master test kit and test your water. Do not use the strips since them are wildly inaccurate and give false readings. If your fish are not eating they may be getting sick from the cycling process which is very hard on fish and will cause them permenant damage and most likely shorten their life. Have you read up on fishless cycling? This is way easier on you and obviously will not harm any fish in the process.

No - not a reefer, although maybe one day......

I meant clown as in clown loach. If you are fishy cycling then you will need to test the water everyday. The ammonia or Nitrite levels may be high and that may be the reason the fish seem "off". When the levels get too high both can be fatal. You should monitor this very closely. I know that you care about your fish. How long has the tank been set up?

Its been a month or so and I have been doing the best I can to cycle my tank. I have read the sticky post tho after I bought my fish :(. I actually joined AC after I bought my fish. I shall try to get back to you with my water parameters shortly.

Ok I ran out of test sol'n :(. Looks like I need to run to the LFS asap. Loach is looking better tho :). He's in a new spot every time I look. I'll get you guys some pics.

Pics would be great! Just keep up the good work we were all newbies at one time 8) Michelle
