For all of you out there who arent as traditional as the hikari rounded diet, what do you feed your fish? I happen to live in Maui and have bugs galore. Last night I fed my oscar a 12 inch centipede. 5 minutes ago i fed a 3 inch gecko. we also have these cane spiders. they can get to be 6 inches across. whatever happens to be in my house he gets. What do you feed your fish!!!

bloodworms, 3 types of flakes, and two types of pellets.

i would advise against feeding your oscar a gecko. really.

centipedes can fight back, and with poisonous claws. the spiders also sound like they might put up a fight. granted, it will be in the water, but still.

:eek3: poor gecko!

I agree! I'm in Honolulu, so I'm guessing the oscar's snack was one of those cute little Asian house geckos we have in Hawaii.

One thing to think about though, besides the centipedes or whatever fighting back, is that many bugs and stuff like that may have been exposed to pesticides or other harmful chemicals in one way or another. The neighbors below me are always setting off bug bombs, and I'm sure whatever I see crawling around (including geckos) are potentially toxic to my fish.
But just my 2 cents :). I'm sure your oscar felt like a champ after taking down that centipede :evil_lol:.

Edit: I didn't even answer you're original question. Besides the usual store-bought fish food, I feed lots of veggies, including zucchini, peas, carrots, and lettuce (all organic, and peeled, just to be safe :)).

Yes i understand what you guys are saying about pestisides.i will consider that. The Centipedes do bite him. but for some reason he takes it like a champ. it doesnt phase him. But usually he grabs them when they are swimming under the water. They look like a snake.

Hotdogs for loaches. That's occasional only though. And for snails, er...would you consider calcium pills such as Tums and plaster of Paris pucks unusual?:grinyes:

Our big fish love milk bones!!

My oscar gets pretty much anything I find in the basement, usually crickets and houseflies. I also take a collection of ramshorns from the rest of the tanks and hte cichlids get a treat.

when i had my ctenopomas, i would give them grey crickets... not that unusual, but they loved them..!

(these were bought from armstrong.. pesticide free..!)

I started thinking. what do i have to worry about. I live in the middle of the jungle. i doubt pesticides. unless it was from me. lol. So i APOLOGIZE FOR THE GECKO. I forgot to tell you why i threw it into the tank with the oscar.....My house was a little warm inside so i opened the window. i look down between the windowand see this little gecko that got caught between the two pieces of glass. I can see all of his internals. His skin has been ripped off by me opening my window. I didnt want to see him lay there and suffer. but then i didnt want to directly kill it out of its misery either. so i did the next best thing and fed it to oscar.......

Just atePellets.....How strange....lol.....jk.
