I use ViaAqua external control heaters. Had a bunch of Jager heaters (like 20 of them). Now only 1 still working, another still works but the indicator light burned out. The ViaAqua been working fine for over 10 years. The newer version is even better designed. Keeping the controller away from the heating element is the best way to go.
I also got a few Penn-Plax submersible (Cascade) heaters. They dont heat the water fast enough due to a built-in overtemp protector that kicks in from time to time.
Tried the Topfin submersible heaters, they are probably the worst I have seen. Returned one within a week since I can tell it started to leak. Still got one with me that doesnt leak but the 'fish' stickers on the heater started to peel off.
