Upgrading Tank Size

Hi all!

I have a 5 gallon tank and really want to upgrade to a 10 or 20 gallon in the next week or so. My question is can I use the water that is in my 5 gallon to start it up, or should I start a brand new cycle? The water in there now is very healthy, and has had the same fish for about a year or so.

The water wont do anything. You could put the filter on the 5 gal on the new one though.

I thought that if the ammonia levels are set in the water that it would be okay to have that water and add the rest since the aquarium is established in the tank I have now.

The good bacteria isnt in the water though so there will be no good bacteria getting rid of the ammonia and nitrites you fish will be creating.

The bacteria will be on the gravel or filter. So if you get a new filter run that along with your old one on the new tank.
