upgrading without cycling ... Ok or no?

Petco is having their $1 a gallon sale and I figured I will go ahead and upgrade my little ones. The plan is just take everything ( water , filter , hides) and put them straight in the new tank and just top it off with dechlorinated water. I have no room to cycle another tank or I wouldnt even think of trying this.

Has anyone attempted this? Would it be ok? Since I am preserving most of the BB ( even though I know almost none is in the water every little bit helps)
 
If you are putting your old filter and everything on the new tank, you should be fine. I would measure the water parameters with a good liquid test kit for a few days/week to make sure, and do water changes accordingly. You might have a mini cycle, but as long as you are adding no new fish right away, you should be fine. Are you going to keep the old filter running with the new filter? Or, will you eventually remove it? At some point, you will need more than just the old filter, since it is a bigger tank. So, unless you plan to run two filters on the tank, you will also want to monitor water quality when you remove the old filter. But, in both instances, you should have no more than a mini-cycle at worst.

I plan to add in a sponge filter to run alongside the current filter eventually ( currently they are so small I should not even attempt more filtration) Oh No problem monitoring the water. I have to be careful currently anyway.
 
NP. If you moved an established filter to a new tank, the tank is cycled immediately. This is also 1 of the advantages of running more than 1 filter on a tank. If you ever need a quick set up, all you need to do is move the filter from the established tank to the new 1 and you are good to go. Good luck.

I'm getting ready to add a third filter to my tank. 2 to "overfilter" my tank, and the third will be available to swap out for QT purposes without noticeably reducing filtration on my tank.
 
I am use to having to traditionally cycle and with these guys being babies I figured it was better to ask than just do it. Thank you guys so much :)

What size are you upgrading to?

I see the $1/gal advertised for my area too, but the add shows only 10, 20 and 40gal tanks.
 
Yep, best deal you are gonna find for a 40 gal breeder that is usually 79.99 at Petco/smart here near me. Not sure if the 55 is included, but that is how I got all 5 of my 40 breeders. Good luck.
 
Are the 40's the same footprint as a 55, but not as tall?
 
Well, a 40 breeder is 36 x 18 x 18. Not sure on a reg 40.
