I was at the Petsmart and in the upside down catfish tank were catfish that looked similar to the UDC but weren't swimming upside down. Anyone have a clue what they might be?

I thought maybe the young ones don't swim upside down and it happens later, like with flounders, but these were a little bigger than the upside down ones.

They could have been a different species of Synodontis. I don't think UDC's always swim upside down though. Were there any other noticeable differences?

Ok thanks, I like them but they might not survive in my tank, bichirs.

I was going to get them for my wifes tank but she doesn't like them, she says them swimming upside down freaks her out.

I rarely see my swimming right side up unless they're picking at the bottom for some reason. They're constantly zipping around upside down when they're out and about. Most fish from the syndontis family swim upside down from time to time and are referred to sometimes at upside down cats. The species syndontis nigraventis (sp?) is the one that stays fairly small and spends the majority of it's time swimming belly up.

hmm thats odd, unless mine is hideing, he never swims upside down, also i thought that they swam upsidedown to hide thier belly if they were near a rock cealing or the surface getting flakes... the zipping around upsidedown is a lil freaky

I find that a little strange. Mine always swim upside down unless they're feeding off the bottom. I see them zipping from one hiding spot to another during the day while upside down.

I have Synodontis who is about 4" long now, and he spends most of his time upright. He goes upside down when underneath rocks or eating food from the surface, but mostly he swims normally.

Mine is always upside down barley right side up, an he is quite small under 1". He has stayed like that over 6 months now. He eats fine and i seem him interact well with my other cats.
