Hi guys can anyone help

I bought a decrative ship wreck for my tank last week and left it in a dish off water which i cleaned each day to ensure it was clean.

I put it in the tank last night, everything was fine, came back from work tonight and in my tank I have:

5 Neon Tetra
5 Rummy Nose tera
2 Sailfin Mollys
5 Guppys
2 Kissing Gourami
2 moonlight Gourami
1 Red Tale Shark
and 1 tiny bristle nose catfish and 2 small shrimps

All the neons where dead, all the rummy nose tetras are dead and all the rest including the shark are gasping for air at the top of the tank. Can anyone offer any help before all my fish are dead, i am so worried.

Id do an immediate water change, 50% or so, and remove the decoration, if you think it might be that. Could it have been contaminated with soap/cleaner? You dont need to soak deocrations, usually, esp. if they are new... Just give them a good rinse, scrub with a clean brush if desired.
What is your usual tank maintenance? DO you test your water paramaters? How big is this tank? (you might be overstocked/have too small of a tank for your fish, I know red tailed sharks will get HUGE) Your deaths may be unrelated to the ship and have to do with some other problems in your tank.

hi

Its a 80g tank, i will go an remove some of the water immediately. I didnt use some on the fish wreck i just soaked it in water as adviced my the local shop

I wonder why they advised you to soak it? Maybe it had gotten something chemically on it by accident...maybe even from the dish in whch it was soaking?? good luck!

Did a test on the water

PH 7.5
NH3 0
NO3 110
NO2 0.8

Can any one help?

If you just got those readings 45 minutes ago, you need to do a serious 50% water change asap. You may be in for several changes, every 12 hours until you are at 0/0/<20 ammonia/nitrite/nitrate.

Do you know what the readings are on your tap water? If not, draw some into a shallow bowl, let sit over night, test and post the results.

How long has this tank been up and running? What kind of cycle did you do before putting in fish? Have you been doing weekly water changes? Including gravel vacs?

Hi I inheritated the tank just over a week ago and had to transport it to my house.

I have emptied the water to 50% and the fish seemed to be loads happy, however about and hour after doing it they are now at the top again?

Should I leave it for a while or change the water again?

Is there anything else I can be doing I feel so helpless and have never had a tank before and only had this one as a relative died and no one else would take them. I feel im letting the fish suffer and really dont know what to do?

Any idea on how well the tank was being maintained before you got it?

When you moved it, were you able to save most of the gravel substrate and decorations, keeping them wet and get them right back in the tank at the other end quickly?

How about the filter, what kind, HOB? Did you keep the pads wet and put them right back into use?

Sounds like you have caused a re-cycle of the tank due to the move. Mainly the bacteria have been disturbed by breaking the tank down and setting it back up. Usually if the substrate and filter pads can be kept wet during the short move and set back up fairly shortly, you can minimize the cycle. There may also be some differences in the water that was used to maintain the tank before and what you have. Did the previous home and/or yours have a house water softner system?

Hi thanks for the reply

The house I got it from didnt have anything in the tank apart from the fish!!! I added a ship wreck and plants to the tank. I have a flural 305 filter in there which was new as the filter they had on the tank was tiny...was told at the LFS that it was only suitable for a goldfish bowl and not my tank.

Im really worried as i changed 50% of the water and they seemed to be happy a few hours ago but now floating back on the top of the tank
